Mr. President, the Equality Act Defies Your Church’s Teaching

Dear Mr. President,

This is my third open letter in the pages of Newsweek, addressing you as a fellow American Catholic. The motive for these public overtures is self-evident: the United States has by no means earlier than had a president who touts his non secular credentials and bona fides, at the same time as he backs one coverage after one other that subverts his church’s teachings. So lengthy as this dissonance continues, it wants addressing—if solely to make clear a couple of fundamentals about what Catholicism teaches, and what it does not.

We will not be talking right here of points about which residents may fairly disagree, like the honest distribution of taxes, the filibuster, the canceling of the Keystone pipeline and so forth. We are focusing as a substitute on the insurance policies of your presidency that might, if taken to their logical conclusion, flagrantly contradict quintessential Church teachings. Your administration’s bare-knuckled promotion of abortion below any circumstances, as I discussed in my first letter, is one instance. The topic of letter two—your refusal to intrude with the mounting assaults upon, and silencing of, your fellow Catholics—is yet one more working example.

To these now add one other public traducing of the precepts of the Magisterium: your group’s rapturous support of the so-called Equality Act.

Mr. President, I’m not a theologian. And that’s precisely the level. If the Equality Act’s anti-religious repercussions are so apparent that members of the laity can enumerate them, how far more brazen should they seem to the Catholic hierarchy? Anyone who has eyed the religion even casually can see that the Equality Act thumbs its nostril at the Bible, which begins “male and female He created them,” and ends with ineradicably “gendered” visions in Revelations.

Let us rely up a couple of of the methods through which the Equality Act defies bedrock ideas of this Church of ours.

First, the act’s method to abortion violates each the spirit and the letter of our faith. To help and abet actions inimical to Church instructing is described in the Catechism as “scandal,” which means “an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil.” This isn’t some boutique preoccupation of the Holy See. Other religions, too, train that it’s improper to encourage one’s fellows to err. Most secular folks would presumably agree.

Your Church, together with others, teaches that abortion is gravely improper. But by redefining the ending of unborn life as a “medical condition,” the Equality Act would vastly improve the ease with which abortions are obtained. If a Catholic president working purposefully to allow the snuffing out of unborn life isn’t “scandal,” or main others astray, nothing is.

Then there may be the act’s interference in the work of physicians and others. Church legislation, often known as canon legislation, instructs that, “All the Christian faithful have the right to be free from any kind of coercion in choosing a state of life.” Mr. President, the Equality Act menaces all trustworthy Christians engaged in well being care. It threatens to pressure participation in acts their religion defines as sinful, together with the everlasting disfiguring of wholesome organs. Such coercion impedes the vocations of others. It is yet one more inescapable instance of what the Church calls “scandal.”

Third, as scholar Anne Hendershott has observed, below this act, “All non secular schools might be compelled [by future lawsuits] to rent those that don’t share [their] teachings and beliefs” and “all Catholic institutions are at risk now—including Catholic hospitals”—as a result of the invoice intentionally excludes conscience protections. If the Equality Act turns into legislation, Catholic establishments might be compelled to incorporate inside their ranks individuals who dissent from Church instructing—even individuals who hate the Church, and are dedicated to its destruction. To fellow Catholics, the message is evident: trample Genesis, or else.

Fourth, as one other scholar, Fr. John Hollowell, has pointed out, your assist of this act defies one other longstanding instructing. In 1885, Pope Leo XIII established through the encyclical Immortale Dei that “It is unlawful to follow one line of conduct in private life and another in public.” As Fr. Hollowell additional notes, Catholics are additionally forbidden to “imped[e] the freedom of ecclesial ministry.” Yet the Equality Act, he writes, will goal “Catholic hospitals, Catholic nurses and doctors, Catholic schools, Catholic adoption agencies, and many Catholic ministry non-profits.” All of those establishments, and extra, might be compelled to knuckle below—or else pay civil and legal penalties for his or her constancy.

In closing, Mr. President, you’ve fondly credited Catholic schooling with guiding you thru the shoals of life—particularly, your prep faculty, Archmere Academy in Delaware. That faculty’s mission assertion professes dedication to 5 particular items: “community, respect, zeal, reverence, and wisdom.”

The Equality Act would jeopardize each one in every of these targets. By tacitly figuring out opponents as “haters” and “bigots”—an uncivil however already widespread apply—it could go to opprobrium on the whole American Catholic “community.” By remodeling the Bible right into a relic of prejudice, it could put “respect” for the Church and its teachings off limits. Because public non secular conviction will carry an ever-higher price, “zeal” would come to be preemptively suppressed—as would “reverence” in the public sq.. Nor will “wisdom” flourish, as soon as anti-scientific prejudice, joined with covert and overt anti-Catholicism, turn out to be proscenia of the American future.

Mr. President, your political course impugns the teachings of your Church and the mission assertion of your personal alma mater. Please contemplate that if an agenda like yours had turn out to be legislation in the United States 60 years in the past, the Archmere Academies amongst us may need been stifled out of existence by now.

Sincerely yours,

A Fellow American Catholic
